Monthly Archives: June 2015

Celebrating in July!

Welcome to July, 2015!

There is always so much to celebrate during the month of July. We spend time at family gatherings, picnics, and honoring our nation’s heritage. During the coming month, we are excited to celebrate our progress in the effort to digitally preserve the pension files from the War of 1812.

We have found some amazing material within the collection so far, and what better way to share it with our friends than in our Facebook group? We now have just over 1,000 people engaged in conversation, asking interesting questions, and assisting each other in their War of 1812 related research. Whether you are a genealogist, historian, or educator, we would invite you to be a part of that community.

Every day in July, we will be sharing a new image found within the digitized files at And with every image, we will be asking for your support in raising the final funds to preserve the entire collection of archived records currently held at the National Archives and Records Administration.

We have raised over 50% of the necessary amount, but we continue to need your help in this effort. Set up your monthly donation, talk to your employer about a matching donation, and work with your genealogical society to crowdsource even more! And after you do all that, spread the word about your donation on Twitter!

Remember that your donation goes a long way. The images will be free forever on, and every donation is matched by, so your $45.00 donation becomes $90.00 and saves 200 pages of these historic, fragile files.

Tell the world today, “I donated to the War of 1812 Preserve the Pensions!” [Tweet this!] and enjoy our month of historical documents in the Facebook group. Together, we will celebrate our American heritage, and we will celebrate the continued success of this historic effort.

Creativity in Matching Campaigns

Is your society having a hard time coming up with new and innovative ideas for a matching campaign to benefit the War of 1812 Preserve the Pensions? We’ll be sharing examples as we learn of them, so that other’s may be inspired!

Today we have the opportunity to learn from the Larimer County Genealogical Society, who has decided to host their first ever annual seminar, and they’ve added a fantastic twist! The leadership has found a way to support not just one – but two – very worthy historical preservation programs. Two-thirds of all ticket sales to “Conference for a Cause” will benefit both the War of 1812 Preserve the Pensions program and the Friday’s Council Tree Chapter, NSDAR Historic Marker Project at Grandview Cemetery (Fort Collins, CO). This project is working to preserve and restore the historic markers already in place, as well as to provide headstones for those veternans who are currently unmarked.

The seminar will be held on November 14, 2015, and features D. Joshua Taylor, President of the Federation of Genealogical Societies, co-host of Genealogy Roadshow, and Director of Family History at Findmypast. The day long event is expected to sell out, especially considering that 2/3 of the ticket cost is tax-deductible. Registration begins July 16, 2015 for members only, and August 1, 2015 for the general public.

As a new FGS member organization, and for their first major event, the folks at LCGS are to be applauded for their efforts in continuing their mission in the genealogical community as well as their ability to find a creative way to support these two excellent endeavors. In addition, they have already pledged to contribute $500 or more in 2015 to the War of 1812 Preserve the Pensions campaign in the FGS Society Matching Campaign Challenge!
